A prime, on-the-sand location in one of North Carolina’s most popular beach communities made this older property an ideal candidate for OTO’s purchase-and-repurpose strategy. Wrightsville Beach, on a barrier island near Wilmington, North Carolina, is the closest beach to the burgeoning Raleigh-Durham Triangle, home to more than 2 million people and one of the fastest-growing metros in the country.

In addition to the property’s recreational draw, Wilmington’s numerous employers and UNC-Wilmington provide a diverse set of demand drivers.
The hotel remained open during an extensive interior redesign — lobby, meeting and event spaces, F&B venues, and guest rooms were all fully refreshed — plus major behind-the-scenes improvements to HVAC and mechanical systems. Upon project completion, the property was reintroduced as Lumina on Wrightsville Beach, a Holiday Inn Resort, a name that draws on local history.

It’s notable now as the only branded hotel on Wrightsville Beach.
